Since its opening in 2008, Aldrich Bay Market at Shau Kee Wan is yet to fulfil its expected usage rate. In collaboration with FEHD and PICO, Make a Difference Social Lab (MaD) recruited lab fellows from the public. Together we addressed the issue with design-thinking approach.

Discovery

The project began with a 1-month ethnographic study. We tried to understand market tenants' situation and the unfulfilled needs in the community. We interviewed tenants, shoppers and talked to nearby residents at focus group meetings.

Our research identified the unique potential of Aldrich Bay Market as a community hub, where people could meet, transfer knowledge and develop stronger incentive to revisit.

Prototype

To make Aldrich Bay Market a better social hub, our team of lab fellows designed prototypes such as culinary class, local snacks pop-up stores and children's corner — all happened inside the market.

We had on-site prototype test runs over two weekends in May and June, attracting 1000+ participants in total.

Conclusion

The prototypes received general positive feedbacks from all stakeholders. Some residents also become friends with the market tenants during our test-runs.

We summarized our findings into insight reports and sent to FEHD for future policy evaluation.
